Fully resourced 'Viking Boy' English planning

Updated: Dec 7, 2023

This is week one of our fully resourced seven-week English planning based around ‘Viking Boy’ by Tony Bradman. This thoroughly engaging text follows Gunnar’s journey as he tries to avenge his father’s death, with many challenges along the way.

Our fully resourced 'Viking Boy' English planning includes 35 x 1 hour English lesson plans written for Years 5 and 6 (aged 9-11). All Learning Intentions come from the National Curriculum for Reading, Writing, Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation for Upper Key Stage 2. During this unit, the children have two extended writing tasks: • Narrative Writing • Journalistic Writing Many grammar aspects are explicitly covered within the scheme: expanded noun phrases, direct speech, relative clauses using relative pronouns, making effective vocabulary choices and the use of dictionaries and thesauruses.

Furthermore, the scheme covers various reading objectives, including performance poetry, inference, providing justifications with views, the impact of figurative language and identifying the meaning of words in context. This scheme has been written with teachers’ time in mind! Every resource you will need for the seven weeks are provided within the download. This includes differentiated activities, planning sheets for the children, posters for the Working Wall and word banks. You just need a few minutes to print them off! Finally, our scheme includes bespoke educational videos, each one focusing on an objective, and all resource illustrations are hand-drawn which engage the children further.
