Journey to the River Sea fully resourced English Planning
Back by popular demand, our original ‘Journey to the River Sea’ fully resourced English planning has been completely revamped with brand-new lessons, fresh activities, updated images and lots of new ideas to inspire your class.
This is a 10-week, fully resourced English unit with 50 ready-to-teach lessons for Years 5 and 6 (ages 9–11), designed to save you time while keeping pupils deeply engaged in the story. As experienced teachers ourselves, we have included everything you’ll need: bespoke teaching videos, WAGOLL texts, oracy opportunities and adapted activities.
Grammar is taught naturally through the text, helping children really understand how language works in real writing. Along the way, they’ll explore:
Word classes
Relative clauses
Parenthesis
Cohesive devices
Subject–verb agreement
Indirect speech
Emotive language
Rather than completing disconnected grammar exercises, pupils apply everything they learn straight into their writing.
Across the unit, children produce four meaningful extended pieces:
A non-chronological report
A biography
Poetry
A persuasive text
Each outcome builds confidence, creativity and technical accuracy, giving pupils plenty of opportunities to develop their writer’s voice while mastering key Year 5 and 6 objectives.
So, grab your pith helmet, lace up your walking boots and unfold your maps…
