This week's Bookshelf Best is 'The Middler' by Kirsty Applebaum.

Maggie is a Middler. Living in Fennis Wick, protected by a boundary of hawthorn, Maggie and her family must stay put - apart from Jed, the eldest. At 14, the elders are the only ones to pass through the safety of the boundary to fight in the Quiet War.

The elders from each family are special: they are future heroes. Whereas, middlers are unimportant without much purpose.

That is until Maggie stumbles across a wanderer: a dirty, dangerous and deceitful wanderer. Will this chance encounter leave Maggie in danger or make her question all that she knows about Fennis Wick?

A highly recommended read for ages 9 and older.
