This week's Bookshelf Best is 'Blitz One Family’s War' by Martin Impey.

This book is simply stunning! The grippingly detailed watercolour illustrations throughout the whole book will keep younger and older readers mesmerised. It sensitively follows how one family’s life is tuned upside down during World War II: saying goodbye to their Daddy who is off to fight; food rations; sirens at night; sleeping in the underground; personal loss; and finally, evacuation. The 247 watercolour images (alongside the historical maps, letters and snippets of radio broadcasts) bring the East End of London to life. This is more than a children’s book – it is a looking glass into understanding how war reshaped the lives of ordinary families in the 1940s.
