This week's Bookshelf Best is 'Dragon Skin' by Karen Foxlee.
Pip can’t quite believe her eyes when she finds a baby dragon at the waterhole. The same waterhole she used to visit daily with her best friend, Mika, before he left her. She knows the baby dragon will die without her help but there is no way she can tell the people she lives with: her mum and her mum’s boyfriend. Pip’s mum is just not the same since ‘he’ moved in. She doesn’t laugh, she doesn’t relax and she is always treading on egg shells around him. Will Pip be able to save this enchanting
half-dead creature, feed it, fix its delicate wings and send it back to wherever it came from?
A touching fantasy story but it has a mild mature theme running through it of domestic abuse. Therefore we wouldn’t suggest it is suitable for children younger
than 11.
