As a huge fan of Phil Earle’s writing, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on Until the Road Ends and it certainly didn’t disappoint! No wonder this week's Bookshelf Best is Until The Road Ends! This beautifully written story captures courage, love, and loyalty in the face of one of history’s darkest times.

When Peggy rescues a scruffy stray dog from an oncoming accident, she and Beau form a bond that’s instantly unbreakable. Her brother Wilf might have been jealous if it weren’t for his own steadfast friendship with a clever cat named Mabel.

But when World War II breaks out, life changes overnight. Peggy and Wilf are evacuated to the countryside to stay with their aunt, leaving their beloved pets behind in London.

Separated by war but connected by love, the siblings write regular letters home — letters their parents faithfully read aloud to Beau and Mabel. That is, until the Blitz changes everything. With the city in ruins and danger all around, it’s up to Beau, Mabel, and the bravest pigeon you’ll ever meet to embark on a daring journey to be reunited with their young owners.

Full of heart, hope, and heroism, our Bookshelf Best, Until the Road Ends, is a truly special story. Phil Earle once again captures the resilience of ordinary people (and animals!) during extraordinary times. It’s an unforgettable wartime adventure that will leave readers laughing, crying, and cheering all at once — a perfect choice for children aged nine and over.
