This week's Bookshelf Best is 'The Lost Whale' by Hannah Gold.
When Rio’s mother knows she needs time and support to become well again, she has no choice but to send her son, Rio, to California to stay with his grandmother (who he doesn’t know) for the summer. Rio, devastated to be separated from his mother, is living under a cloud of misery and sulking. That is, until he finally looks up and notices a girl called Marina, the wide ocean in front of him and most significantly, the grey whales. When Rio discovers his mother once had a deep bond with the whales too, he knows by helping the whales he will help his mother recover. A wonderful animal adventure story of bravery, perseverance and being present. We highly recommend this for readers of eight years and over.
